Liz Oakley
I teach piano, keyboard, saxophone and flute to people of all ages and abilities.
Music has always been a big part of my life from a young age, and I value it as a creative and therapeutic outlet. I particularly enjoy helping others reach their musical goals and encouraging students to achieve beyond what they thought they were capable of.
I have gained grade 8 ABRSM certificates in piano, saxophone and flute and I graduated with an Honours Degree in music in 2001 from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. More recently I qualified as a Music Therapist, obtaining a Master’s Degree from the University of the West of England in Bristol.
I have been teaching one-to-one music lessons for over 20 years and have experience of working with adults, teenagers and children with all different needs, abilities, and musical interests.
My preferred piano tutor series is John Thompson, but I also teach using Christopher Norton Microjazz, or Pauline Hall books, or any other books or sheet music my students bring along to their lesson. I encourage my students to try out different musical styles so that they grow in confidence and find their own unique sound and mode of expression. For beginner saxophone students the tutor series I use is “The Complete Saxophone Player” by Raphael Ravenscroft and for flute “The Complete Flute Player” by John Sands.
The ethos I promote with all my students is that there is nothing magical or mystical about being able to play music well. It is the amount of dedicated practice that they put in daily between their weekly lessons that will really make the difference, enabling them to achieve a high quality performance that they can be proud of.
I am based in Monmouth, which is approximately 10 miles from Ross-on-Wye.
